Dolores Mae Davis, of Newton, IA, (formerly of Unionville, MO) passed away her home in Newton, IA, on Friday, September 28, 2018. She had resided there for about two years.

Dolores Mae (Ross) Davis was born in Cincinnati, IA, on April 30, 1935, the daughter of Lee & Velma (Burns) Ross, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Cincinnati High School in 1954 and married Robert O. Davis on April 4, 1955. They soon moved to the family farm in Putnam County and were engaged in farming until they moved to Prairie City, IA, in 1965. Dolores worked as a nurses’ aide at the Clearview Manor in Prairie City and then as a home health care aide. She began working at the Prairie City School system as a custodian in 1970 and worked there until her retirement in 1996. Dolores’ first job was as a “shaving girl” at the Broadmoor Hotel and Resort in Colorado where she worked with her mother for a summer at the age of 16. In retirement Robert and Dolores sold their home, bought a new truck and camper and traveled south in the winter. They later settled back in Unionville, MO, and Dolores moved to Newton when Robert passed away.

Dolores liked to stay active regardless of her age or where she lived. She liked to bowl and square dance with her son-in-law and daughter Linda. She sewed and worked with crafts and liked to do word search puzzles and play card games with neighbors and family. Dolores volunteered at the Bargain Barn and the Senior Center in Unionville. She was a member of the Unionville First Christian Church and lately attended Prairie City Christian Church with her daughter.

Dolores is survived by her children: sons Stanley Davis of Unionville, MO, and James (Julie) Davis of Ogden, IA; and daughters Linda Boddicker of Prairie City, IA, and Christina (Delbert) Gilchrest of Newton, IA. She is also survived by four grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, as well as Angela Brown of Aurora, MO, whom Dolores considered an “adopted daughter” and her special canine companion, Bandit.

Dolores was preceded in death by her husband who passed away April 30, 2016. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Lee Davis and Joseph Davis, and a son-in-law, Bill Boddicker. Two brothers, Dwight Ross and Donnie Ross, and a sister, Ruth Galleher, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Dolores will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
