MACON REDISTRICTING PETITION VERIFIED

by BENJAMIN C. NELSON

Shortly before the Macon R-1 Superintendent and Attorney released an informational sheet on what redistricting would do to the Macon R-1 School District, the Macon County Clerk had verified the Redistricting Petition here in Macon County. The County Clerk accepted 342 Signatures while only needing 152 to make it a valid petition. Today, both the Macon and Shelby County Petitions have been verified, thrusting this proposal onto the ballots to face the voters in the August Election. Moving forward, we are slowly starting to plan a Town Hall in Mid-Summer. This would be open to the public to testify or ask questions in any way. Here at the paper, we also have several questions that we would like to get answered for you the public:

1. Why are we here in the first place? What is the reasoning behind redistricting?

2. Would both School Boards work together to allow High School Students to choose between the two districts if redistricting would occur?

3. For the families that would have to redistrict into Macon, would they still have to pay the newly passed tax levy in Shelby County?

4. Besides the obvious revenue bonus to the Macon R-1 School District if redistricting were to occur, what other sides are there to this? Emotional? Physical? (Students having to leave their school they've attended for years; Would this impact the relationship between Macon and South Shelby at all?)

5. If on district votes to not redistrict and the other district votes for redistricting, what happens in the instance of arbitration?
