BREAKING: Redistricting Petition Served to Macon R-1

by BENJAMIN C. NELSON

On election day, it has been confirmed that a second petition has been served, this time to Macon R-1. Last night we reported on the first petition being filed and served to the Shelby County School Board. These petitions have one purpose: To Redistrict the Macon R-1 and Shelby County School Districts. What does this mean now? Without a doubt, since both petitions have garnered enough signatures (in the process of being verified) for the proposal of redistricting to be officially on the ballot in a FUTURE ELECTION (probably in August). Voters in both school districts will NOW have to vote whether or not to redistrict the school districts (again, if both petitions are verified). If passed, students within the western part of the Shelby County School District will then become a part of Macon R-1 School District and be forced to attend Macon R-1 after redistricting occurs. If one district votes yes and one district votes no, the matter will then proceed to the state school board where it will enter arbitration and will be decided then. Finally, if both districts vote no, then redistricting simply doesn't occur.

The biggest question is, who are the people behind these petitions? With the news today, we will be planning a public forum in which we will be inviting those involved to answer questions from the public on why redistricting should occur. More information to come in the coming days.
