Hjalmer August Lindberg

Hjalmer August Lindberg 82, of Albia, Iowa went to be with his Lord and Savior October 19, 2017 at Monroe County Hospital.

Hjalmer was born April 7, 1935 at Kirksville, Missouri to Hjalmer August Sr. and Inez Alice Thiele Lindberg. He graduated from Kirksville High School Class of 1953. He attended Kirksville State Teachers College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education and later received his Masters Degree. While in college he was active in the Baptist Student Union and served as a summer missionary in 1956 in Wyoming, where he directed ten Vacation Bible Schools in eight weeks. Hjalmer was united in marriage to Emma Josephine Kittle of Gorin, Missouri on August 24, 1956 at the First Baptist Church in Kirksville. They were blessed with five children, ten grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. They celebrated their 59th anniversary together before Josephine’s passing in 2015.

In 1957, Hjalmer came to Albia for his first High School Business teaching job and held that position until 1966, when he became a counselor at the high school and later at the middle school. He retired from teaching, counseling and float building in 1997. He continued substituting at Albia, Moravia, Chariton, Eddyville, Blakesburg and Ottumwa Schools until 2014. He sincerely loved young people and very seldom missed a day of school because of illness.

Hjalmer became an MFA/Shelter Insurance Agent in 1960 and served his loyal customers until his son, Brian, purchased the agency in 1987. He worked hard all his life, taking over the responsibility of the small farm after his father-in-law was unable to do the work. He loved being outdoors, gardening, tending his animals, watching the birds and all of God’s creation. He took pride in keeping his surroundings beautiful and enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as often as possible.

Hjalmer was a charter member of the First Baptist Church in Albia, where he served as deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher of youth and Royal Ambassador Leader for many years. He was also a dedicated member of the Gideon’s International for over 40 years, speaking in area churches to share how people can help provide Bibles that are placed in motels, hospitals, care centers, jails and other facilities all over the nation. He truly loved visiting residents in the nursing homes and was never happier than when he could be of help to a friend or family member.

He is survived by; one daughter, Jolette (Don) Boyer of Chillicothe,

Missouri; three sons, Brian (Barbara) Lindberg, of Unionville, IA, Dr. Bruce (Deena) Lindberg of Ottumwa, IA., and Dr. Brent (Belinda) Lindberg of Bloomfield, IA; nine grandchildren, Megan (Andrew) Wilson, Abbey (Ben) Feller, Dr. Chad (Andrea) Lindberg, Dr. Cory (Holly) Lindberg, Randa (Joe) Austin, Erin (Brad) Fields, Jessica (Logan) Johnson and Camden and Crew Lindberg, 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl Miller and Evelyn Falls. Many nieces, nephews and close friends also survive him.

His wife, Josephine; his parents; Hjalmer Sr. and Inez; a daughter, Colette Gaye Lindberg; a granddaughter, Brooklyn Nicole Lindberg; two brothers, four sisters and their spouses and a nephew, San Dewayne Francisco in the Vietnam War, preceded Hjalmer in death. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2017at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, with Pastor Matthew Risting officiating. Burial will follow services at the Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Monday, October 23, 2017 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Hjalmer’s family present from5:00 p.m –8:00 p.m., to greet family and friends.
