Michael Steven (“Haystack”) Calhoun, 64, of Queen City, returned to his heavenly home on May 15, 2019, after a valiant battle with a brief illness.

The son of John Nelson and Wilda June (Barnett) Calhoun, Mike was born November 19, 1954, in Kirksville, MO.

Mike is survived by his sister-in-law, Tanna Calhoun of Greentop, two nieces, Jill Moncrief & husband Brad of Queen City; and Jana Calhoun of Greentop; one nephew, Chris Calhoun and fiancé Amy of St. Louis; five great nieces and nephews: Tanner, Mason, Kaitlyn, Maddox and Tessa; special cousins Jean Robbins and Richard & Carol Western of Queen City, many cherished friends and an entire community that loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his father John in 1974, his mother Wilda in 1992 and his beloved brother Phil in 2016.

Mike grew up and attended school in Queen City, ultimately making it his life-long home. There, Mike lived a simple life. Rain or shine, he made his daily rounds through Queen City on his bike, greeting all he met with his well-known wave. Mike embraced the community, becoming a familiar fixture at local events. He was an honorary member of the Queen City Fire Department, enjoyed his small jobs in town and cherished his visits with his many friends. He was an avid sports fan, faithfully supporting the Schuyler County Rams, Mizzou Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. Mike was a true and faithful servant of God, never missing a service at the Queen City Christian Church, where he was a long-time member. He was well-known for his sharp memory, sense of humor and infectious smile. He was a friend and inspiration to all who knew him.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 21, 2019 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dooley Funeral Home in Queen City.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at Dooley Funeral Home with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Burial will be in the Queen City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris Calhoun, John Applegate, Paul Applegate, Josh Applegate, John March and Doug Watt.

Memorials are suggested to the Queen City Cemetery and can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
