STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION RELEASES ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORTS - Area Schools Shine

by BENJAMIN C. NELSON

(JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri)

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has released their annual "grade-cards" on schools around the state from 2018. "It's essentially to see how well schools are doing in educating their students, so you will see things like student achievement involved or included in these reports, things like graduation rates and attendance," said Nancy Bowles, Communications Coordinator with the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education. The Macon County Home Press sifted through the results and this article is meant to highlight schools within our reading area, Macon and Shelby County. On the reports, percentages were reflected in the areas of 3rd Grade English, 7th Grade Math, Career Education Placement, Career Education Graduation, and Technical Skill Attainment. There were several other statistics including about where districts get their funding, etc. For the full report, please visit the link at the bottom of this article.

The 3rd Grade English section represents the percentage of students who take the required assessment or MAP-Alternate Assessment and score Proficient or Advanced. It is calculated by the total number of third grade students scoring proficient or advanced on the grade level MAP English language arts assessment + 3rd grade MAP-Alternate English Language arts assessment/ total number of third grade students assessed on the grade level MAP English Language Arts Assessment. This is important as DESE states it is closely associated with high school graduation and success later in life.

The 7th Grade Math section represents the percentage of students who take the required assessment (EOC if appropriate) or MAP-Alternate Assessment and score Proficient or Advanced. It is calculated by the total number of students scoring proficient or advanced on required MAP math assessments/total number of students assessed on the MAP math assessment (grade level, End of Course or MAP-Alternate).

The Career Education Placement section represents a positive placement for concentrators in career education. IT is calculated by the percentage of Career Technical Education (CTE) concentrators who were positively placed in post-secondary education or advanced training, in the military, or employment within 180 days of graduation following the program year in which the CTE student graduated or received a GED.

The Career Education Graduation Rate is for concentrators in career education and is calculated by measuring the percentage of Career Technical Education (CTE) concentrators who graduate within four years (grades 9-12).

The Technical Skill Attainment section are for concentrators in career education. To measure technical skill attainment, a third-party, industry-recognized skill assessment is required to be given to Career Technical Education (CTE) concentrators who complete a Department-approved CTE program to measure the technical skill proficiency of CTE students.

Finally, school districts received an Annual Performance Report (APR). APR Points Earned is the overall score for each of the MSIP 5 Performance Standards - Academic Achievement, Subgroup Achievement, High School Readiness, College and Career Readiness, Attendance Rate and Graduation Rate. They are calculated by a comprehensive guide outlined by the Missouri School Improvement Program.
