Mary Magdalene Smothers, 99, of Kirksville, Missouri passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at Twin Pines Adult Care center in Kirksville.

The daughter of Edward and Susie (Smith) Lyberger, she was born May 22, 1919 in Cutler, Illinois. On July 6, 1937 in Perryville, Missouri. she married Robert "Bobby" Smothers, who preceded her in death on July 6, 1997.

Mary is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Barnes and special friend, Jack Wood of Kirksville; two granddaughters, Carol Lynn McCarthey and husband Dave of Springfield, Missouri, and Dorothy Durant of Appleton, Wisconsin; four great grandchildren, John and sister Mary McCarthey of Springfield, Missouri, Danny Russell and Deborah Rameriz of Appleton, Wisconsin; ten great, great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Vernice Davis, Jewel Brown, and Ruth Rarig.

In August of 1998, Mary moved to Kirksville after the death of her husband. They were married 60 years on July 6, 1997.

They lived in Leland, Illinois almost 52 years. Mary worked in the school kitchen for 11 and a half years, for Bilt Rite MFG for 11 and a half years, and for CTS Circuit Boards for 2 and a half years.

Mary joined RSVP in Kirksville on March 13, 2001. She loved helping others , she worked in the Kirksville Heights dining room.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Travis-Noe Funeral Home, with Pastor Alan Coonfield officiating. A public visitation will be held one hour before the service. Interment will be in the Leland Cemetery in Leland, Illinois. Public visitation will be held one hour before the service in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home.
