Mary Grace Roof August 08, 1935 - December 04, 2018

Mary Roof, 83, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. She had been a resident there for less than a week.

Mary Grace (Powell) Roof was born in Unionville, MO, on August 8, 1935, the daughter of Leslie Lewis and Grace Elizabeth (Shultz) Powell who preceded her in death. She was reared in Unionville and graduated from Unionville High School in 1953. Mary was united in marriage to Robert Roof in Unionville on December 1, 1954, and three children were born to this union: Rodney, Roberta, and June.

Mary and Robert spent most of their married life on a farm in northwest Putnam County where Mary carried out her role as a farmer’s wife and homemaker. She helped Robert on the farm and enjoyed caring after her family. Mary was a person with a sweet disposition who loved to help others. She had a quiet strength that served her family well and they were the center of her world. She liked to sew for her grandchildren and she was known for her noodles, which she made “thin and perfect.” Mary was a member of the First Christian Church in Unionville.

Mary is survived by a son, Rodney (Toni) Roof of Des Moines, IA, and a daughter, June (Doug) Gadberry of Unionville, MO. Her grandchildren are Shera (husband Steve Luoma) Street, Bethany (Mike) Cook, Zachary (Katie) Gadberry, and Kyle Gadberry. Mary’s great grandchildren are Ayden Aswegan, Caleb and Kellen Cook, and Jude and Leo Luoma. Mary is also survived by two brothers, Jesse Powell and Robert Powell, and a sister Rowena Haas. Numerous nieces and nephews as well as many Roof and Powell extended family members survive as well. The family would like to express special thanks to Judy Kelso, home health care worker and friend, who gave wonderful care for Mom these last six months.

Mary was preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Roof, a brother, Virgil Powell, and a sister, Geneva Robinson.

Funeral services for Mary Roof will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 4, 2018, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Unionville Cemetery.
