Joan Ray, 70, of Unionville, MO, passed away unexpectedly at Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville on Sunday, July 8, 2018.

Joan Carol (Grogan) Ray was born at home in rural Livonia, MO, on July 11, 1947, the daughter of Darl and Thelma (Hinerman) Grogan, who preceded her in death. She attended school at Oak Grove and Livonia in Putnam County before graduating from High School at Lancaster, MO. She spent a few years on the farm after graduation and then married Ronald Green; they later divorced. Joan married Joseph Ray on September 15, 1973, and he preceded her in death on November 18, 1998. One child was born to this union, Tammie.

Joan and Joe moved to Raytown, MO, in 1974 and Joan began a long career in environmental services at two Kansas City area hospitals. She worked at Park Lane Medical Center and Research Medical Center, retiring from Research in 2007. She was well liked and respected at both places, building strong friendships. Joan returned to Putnam County in 2009, living in Unionville. She enjoyed strong friendships in Unionville as well.

Joan loved music, especially Bluegrass music. She also played the organ and often joined her mother in duets on the piano and organ, both playing by ear. She was an avid Kansas City Chiefs football and Missouri Tiger basketball fan. Joan kept a good spirit in spite of several health issues over the past years. She attended Broadlawn Baptist Church in Unionville, MO.

Joan Ray is survived by her daughter, Tammie (Martay) Greene of Kansas City, MO, and three grandchildren, Andre (Marissa) Quarles, Aneshea Quarles, and Asyna Jenkins. She is also survived by one great grandchild, Andre Quarles, III, as well as two brothers, Frankie (Marge) Grogan of Livonia, MO, and Jerry (Betty) Grogan of Kearney, MO.

Joan was also preceded in death by a sister, Darlene Tipton.

Funeral services for Joan Ray will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Hinerman Cemetery, Livonia, MO.
