by BENJAMIN C. NELSON

On Tuesday (April 3rd 2018) voters that live within the city limits of Macon, Missouri will be voting on several key items, one being, who will lead Macon as Mayor. In over a decade, incumbent Mayor Dale Bagley has run unopposed – this time he will be facing local businessman James “Talt” Holman. Both gentlemen have campaigned throughout the past several weeks/months and even participated in a public candidate forum on February 26th where they answered questions from Moderator Benjamin Nelson. THE FOLLOWING IS FROM MAYOR DALE BAGLEY: “I am Dale Bagley, the Mayor of the City of Macon. If re-elected, I will continue to lead the City of Macon toward a better future and votes can be sure that I can do that because I have provided that leadership during the entire time I have served as Macon’s Mayor. An important duty of the Mayor is to work with the citizens and businesses of the City of Macon to focus on creating more and better jobs for our community. I will provide the leadership and vision that is needed to address the issues that the community confronts, and I will make sure that the City of Macon continues to be a great place to work, shop and raise a family. I have worked with our community to provide the funding for Fire Department, to improve Macon’s streets and to make sure that homes and businesses are protected from flooding. I have lead the City’s effort to provide the police with 4 new vehicles, worked with the Macon R-I School to have a Police Resource Officer and with the Police Dept. to obtain grants that help provided needed equipment. As the Mayor of Macon, I have helped make Highway 36 into a four-lane highway, improved the Macon Flower Memorial Airport so it can serve local businesses, supported projects like, the Community Child Development Center, The Macon Senior Citizens Center, The Maples Repertory Theatre, and many more efforts that make the City of Macon a better place for its citizens. I will make sure that the City meets its responsibility to provide safe parks, the promised swimming pools and to provide for the other recreational needs of its citizens and families.

I have lived in Macon over 50 years. I graduated with two degrees from the University in Kirksville. I have worked for MoDOT, Edward Jones Investments, the Macon R-I Schools, Northeast Missouri State University, and worked in the meat departments of several stores to pay my way through College. I am a member of the Macon United Methodist Church, the Macon Lions Club, the Macon Elks Lodge 999, the Macon County Amateur Radio Club, and I am currently the Chairman of the Highway 36/I-72 Corridor Transportation Development District. I am totally dedicated to my family, my faith, and to the City of Macon. “

THE FOLLOWING IS FROM BUSINESSMAN JAMES “TALT” HOLMAN: “I grew up in Macon and am a life-long resident. I graduated from Macon R-1 High School and from Missouri Western State College with a B.S. in Business Administration and Human Resource Management. I received an Honorable Discharge from the U. S. Army National Guard having served in the Engineering Corps. I started working in the family business while still in high school as a laborer and worked my way up to management. In 2004, I started my own business. As a business owner, I employ over 30 people, and am responsible for making daily decisions that affect the success of that business. If elected, I will put my business skills to work for the people of Macon, looking at numbers and how they affect the bottom line, how funds allocated to specific departments and projects can be used in the most efficient manner to get the job done properly. I have a vested interest in this community. I have children growing up here and like other citizens in Macon, I want them to have the desire to return to Macon when their education is completed and give back to the community. Our young people are the future of Macon.

I chose to run for Mayor because we have an opportunity to shape our City’s future and to create a legacy of economic growth for future generations. There has been no real progress in attracting the kinds of businesses that would complement our rural setting. Although we have in just the past few weeks had a plan for repairing our streets published in the papers, unless this is done by properly trained city personnel, it will not have the desired result. Our city pool has been closed for a long time and we still have no known plan or cost, at this time, for replacing it. There has been a lot of talk, but no action. It is very important to me to have a commitment to a fair and transparent decision-making process. I will be accountable to the voters and my promises to them will be backed by actions. The residents of this city have the chance to define the future of Macon and I want to work with them to make our community the best that it can be.”
